Thread

  • I use only high quality threads. My preference is to use 100% long staple cotton thread and have an extensive selection of colors on hand. Many quilters prefer cotton as it is soft, wears well, and matches the fiber most commonly used in the construction of the top.

  • I also stock an assortment of variegated polyester, high-sheen metallic colored and variegated polyester, and monofilament (clear and smoky) nylon threads. I will most often match these top threads with an appropriate weight cotton thread on the back side. Some of these threads tend to be more expensive, but may provide just the look you’re trying to achieve.

  • My thread prices are calculated by the number of bobbins used times the price range for the top thread selected. Solid colors of cotton or polyester and monofilament threads will cost $1 per bobbin. High sheen polyester, variegated, and other specialty threads will cost $1.50 per bobbin.

  • If you have a specific thread you would like me to use on your quilt, I would be glad to consider it. Not all threads are able to withstand the rigors of a high speed quilting machine and may not be appropriate for use.

Available choices:

  • Aurifil: A 40 wt. long staple Egyptian cotton, available in a rainbow of colors. It is imported from Italy, and gives a soft, smooth look. I currently stock over 100 color options.

  • Signature 100% Cotton: A favorite in the industry. This 40 tex. weight cotton is available in 56 solid colors as well as variegated.

  • Superior Poly Quilter: a 30 wt. spun polyester thread, available in 10 vibrant variegated colors. It has the look and feel of cotton, with the added strength of polyester.

  • Madeira Poly Neon: This is a high sheen polyester thread with the gloss of rayon and the strength of polyester. Available in 9 beautifully variegated colors.

  • Rheingold High Sheen Polyester: 100% polyester with the look of metallic thread without the breakage problems encountered when using most metallic threads on a high speed quilting machine.

  • YLI Wonder Thread: A .004mm nylon thread for those times when you don’t want to see the thread. It is fine and soft, and available in clear or smoky.
